Abstract
A method is disclosed for forming an article that includes the steps of filling a mold with a solid or particulate material, inserting a tool into the mold with a portion of the tool extending from the mold, and striking the tool with an impact ram to adiabatically coalesce the material in the mold to form an object having the shape of the mold. An apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

A method of forming an article through adiabatic coalescence comprising the steps of:
- providing a mold;
- filling the mold with a material;
- placing a tool in the mold that extends from the mold;
- providing a striking unit;
- and,
- striking the tool with the striking unit with adequate force to adiabatically coalesce the material.
