Abstract
Imidazonaphthyridine compounds that are unsubstituted at the 2-position induce the biosynthesis of cytokines such as interferon and tumor necrosis factor. The compounds exhibit antiviral and antitumor properties. Methods of preparing the compounds and intermediates useful in the preparation of the compounds are also disclosed.

A compound of the formula I:
- wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C1-20 alkyl that is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, —O—C1-20 alkyl, —N(R3)2, and —NR3—CO—C1-20 alkyl;
- n is 0 to 3;
- each R is independently selected from the group consisting of C1-10 alkyl, C1-10 alkoxy, halogen, and CF3;
- and
- each R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C1-10 alkyl;
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
