Abstract
Hydrogen propelled vehicles and fundamentally new magnesium-based hydrogen storage alloy materials which for the first time make it feasible and practical to use solid state storage and delivery of hydrogen to power internal combustion engine or fuel cell vehicles. These exceptional alloys have remarkable hydrogen storage capacity of well over 6 weight % coupled with extraordinary absorption kinetics such that the alloy powder absorbs 80% of its total capacity within 10 minutes at 300° C. and a cycle life of at least 500 cycles without loss of capacity or kinetics.
Claims44
In a hydrogen powered vehicle system, said system including:
- at least one of an internal combustion engine fueled by hydrogen or a fuel cell;
- and
- a hydrogen storage means operatively interconnected to said internal combustion engine or fuel cell, the improvement comprising said hydrogen storage means including a hydrogen storage alloy powder characterized in that said alloy powder has:
- a) a hydrogen storage capacity of at least 6 weight %;
- b) absorption kinetics such that the alloy powder absorbs 80% of it's total capacity within 10 minutes at 300° C.;
- and
- c) said hydrogen storage alloy powder comprising at least 90 weight % Mg, 0.5 to 2.5 weight % Ni, and Mm.
A magnesium based hydrogen storage alloy powder, said alloy comprising at least 90 weight % magnesium, 0.5 to 2.5 weight percent Ni, and also including Mm, said alloy powder having:
- a) a hydrogen storage capacity of at least 6 weight %;
- and
- b) absorption kinetics such that the alloy powder absorbs 80% of it's total capacity within 10 minutes at 300° C.
