Abstract
A laser leveling system includes an angle measurement device for determining the position of a laser level relative to a base. The system further includes a mechanism for determining the distance from the laser level to a target.

A leveling system comprising:
- a base;
- a laser leveling device having a laser, the leveling device mounted on said base such that said laser leveling device can rotate relative to said base and including a device that can divert part of an output of the laser;
- an encoder mounted to one of said base and said laser leveling device, the encoder being illuminated by said part of the output of the laser;
- and
- a sensor mounted to the other of said base and said laser leveling device, with the sensor sensing the position of the laser leveling device relative to said base.

- a base;
- a laser leveling device mounted on said base such that said laser leveling device can rotate relative to said base;
- an encoder mounted to one of said base and said laser leveling device;
- and
- a sensor mounted to the other of said base and said laser leveling device, with the sensor sensing a position of the laser leveling device relative to said base,
- wherein said laser leveling device has a laser and a device that can divert part of an output of the laser in order to illuminate the encoder.

- and wherein said laser leveling device includes a laser and a device adapted to divert at least a portion of an output of said laser to illuminate said encoder.
