Coated nanoparticles are used for composites and media. Exemplary applications include magnetic applications involving a solid matrix material and a nanostructured magnetic material.

A magnetic composite material comprising:
- a solid matrix material;
- and
- a coated nanostructured barium ferrite filler.
A magnetic tape comprising:
- a support having thereon a magnetic layer comprising a coated ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a filler, wherein the average grain size of the ferromagnetic powder is 100 nanometers or less.
