## CPC

- C08G 63/664: derived from hydroxy carboxylic acids
- C08G 63/6922: {derived from hydroxy carboxylic acids}
- C08G 63/912: {derived from hydroxycarboxylic acids}
- C08G: MACROMOLECULAR COMPOUNDS OBTAINED OTHERWISE THAN BY REACTIONS ONLY INVOLVING UNSATURATED CARBON-TO-CARBON BONDS

## Abstract

A dispersant which is a phosphate ester of a polymer which contains at least one ether group and a poly(oxyalkylenecarbonyl) chain (POAC chain) derivable from two or more different hydroxycarboxyl acids or lactones thereof. Also disclosed is the use of the dispersants in paints and printing inks including millbases. The preferred dispersants are phosphate esters of an alkyl end-capped poly(oxyalkylenecarbonyl) chain alcohol where the POAC chain is derived from ε-caprolactone and δ-valerolactone and the alkyl group is derived from a monohydroxypolyalkyleneglycol.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A TPOAC mono-functional alcohol which is a polymer containing at least one ether group and a poly(oxyalkylenecarbonyl) chain derived from two or more different hydroxycarboxylic acids or lactones thereof.

### Claim 2

A TPOAC mono-functional alcohol which is a copolymer of formula
RO[Brketopenst](CO—A—O)n(CO—B—O)m]H (1)
wherein
R is a polymerisation terminating group containing at least one ether link;
A and B are each, independently, different alkenylene groups or C1-17-alkylene groups optionally substituted by alkyl;
n and m are each positive integers; and
n+m is from 2 to 200.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 1 wherein at least one of said two or more different hydroxycarboxylic acids or lactones is a hydroxycarboxylic acid.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 3 wherein said hydroxycarboxylic acid is 12-hydroxystearic, ricinoleic, 12-hydroxydodecanoic, 5-hydroxydodecanoic, 5-hydroxydecanoic, 4-hydroxydecanoic, glycolic, lactic, 6-hydroxyhexanoic or 5-hydroxypentanoic acids.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 1 wherein at least one of said two or more different hydroxycarboxylic acids or lactones is a lactone.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 5 wherein said lactone is propiolactone, butyrolactone, δ-valerolactone, ε-caprolactone or alkyl-substituted ε-caprolactone.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 6 wherein said alkyl-substituted ε-caprolactone is substituted with a linear or branched C1-8 alkyl group.

### Claim 8 (depends on 2)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 2 wherein R represents a residue of a mono-hydroxy glycol or a mono-hydroxy polyalkyleneglycol.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 8 wherein said mono-hydroxy glycol or mono-hydroxy polyalkyleneglycol is derived from a C2-4 alkyleneoxide.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 9 wherein said C2-4 alkyleneoxide includes ethylene oxide or propylene oxide.

### Claim 11 (depends on 2)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 2 wherein R is derived from a compound represented by
T—OH
wherein T is a substituted or unsubstituted C1-35 hydrocarbyl radical.

### Claim 12 (depends on 2)

The TPOAC alcohol of claim 2, wherein R is the residue of tripropyleneglycolmonomethyl ether, dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether, triethylene glycolmonomethyl ether, methoxy propylene glycol or methoxyethylene glycol having a molecular weight between 250 and 750.
