## Abstract

The use of COMT inhibitors in the treatment of control of pain in mammals, for example in animals and humans.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for the treatment of pain, said method comprising administering to a mammal in need of treating pain an effective amount of a COMT inhibitor or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof wherein the COMT inhibitor is a derivative of a catechol compound.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the derivative of a catechol compound has an electronegative substituent at an ortho-position to one of the hydroxy groups of the catechol moiety.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said COMT inhibitor is selected from nitecapone, entacapone and tolcapone.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said COMT inhibitor is nitecapone.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the pain is acute pain.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the pain is chronic pain.
