Abstract
An antiseptic composition useful in destroying the infectivity of infectious proteins such as prions is disclosed. The antiseptic composition is preferably maintained at a pH of 4.0 or less which allows for an environment under which the active component destroys infectivity. The composition may be added to blood, blood products, collagen, tissues and organs prior to transplantation. The composition also may be added to livestock feed to denature any prions in the livestock. Methods of denaturing infectious proteins are also disclosed.
Claims3
A method of inactivating the infectivity of a PrP protein, comprising the steps of:
- contacting a PrP protein with a composition comprising an acid component and an active component chosen from C10 alkyl sulfate, sodium salt;
- C11 alkyl sulfate, sodium salt;
- C12 alkyl sulfate, sodium salt;
- C12 alkyl sulfate, lithium salt;
- and C12 alkyl sulfate, Tris salt;
- maintaining the composition in contact with the PrP protein at a pH in a range of from about 2.5 to about 4.5 with an acid chosen from acetic acid, lactic acid and peracetic acid at a temperature in a range of from about 37° C. to about 80° C. thereby rendering the PrP protein completely non-infectious in 2.0 hours or less.
