Abstract
A circuit and a method for limiting a voltage to a specified value (e.g., a rail voltage) without clipping thereby includes a pair of MOSFETs that turn on when a specified bias voltage is reached to either add to or sink current from the input node of the resistive load responsive to fluctuations in current going through the output resistive load to maintain a constant current through it. A plurality of biasing circuits is provided that control the turn on voltage levels for the MOSFETs to achieve the desired operation. The biasing circuits include circuit components that are matched to circuit components within the circuitry that adds and drains current to the output resistive load including a resistive load that matches the output resistive load.

A voltage limiter circuit for limiting voltage across a load, comprising:
- first and second current steering circuits;
- a first current sink;
- first and second transistors of a differential amplifier, each having a first input terminal coupled to receive an amplified output from a pair of operational amplifiers, a first output terminal coupled to the first current sink and a second input terminal coupled first and second current steering circuits;
- the load coupled to the first and second current steering circuits and also coupled to the second input terminals of the first and second transistors;
- and
- wherein the first and second transistors of the differential amplifier generate a primary current for defining an output voltage across the load responsive to the amplified outputs received from the pair of operational amplifiers and wherein the first and second current steering circuits sink and source current from and to the load responsive to output voltage to prevent clipping.
A method for limiting an output signal to a rail voltage without clipping, comprising:
- receiving a signal having an amplitude that is approximately equal to a specified rail voltage;
- generating an amount of current from a current source;
- sinking an amount of current that equals one half of the amount of current generated by the current source;
- steering current in and out of a resistive load coupled to a node that is further coupled to the current source so that an amplitude of a signal across the resistive load does not exceed a specified rail voltage magnitude.
A method in a circuit coupled to a resistive load, comprising:
- generating first and second bias signals defining upper and lower rail signal levels;
- adding current to the node coupled to a load to maintain a voltage drop over the load to prevent the voltage from exceeding the lower rail signal level;
- and
- sinking current from the node to maintain a voltage drop over the load to prevent the voltage from exceeding the upper rail signal level.
A voltage limiter circuit, comprising:
- a differential amplifier further including first and a second amplification transistors, the first and second amplification transistors further including first input terminals;
- a plurality of current steering transistors coupled to the first input terminals of the first and second amplification transistors, the plurality of current steering transistors for sinking current from and sourcing current into the first input terminals of the first and second amplification transistors;
- and
- a plurality of biasing circuits for defining voltage rail levels used to bias the plurality of current steering transistors, the plurality of biasing circuits producing bias signals to the plurality of current steering transistors.
