Abstract
The invention provides a genetically modified Cyanobacteria having a construct comprising DNA fragments encoding pyruvate decarboxylase (pdc) and alcohol dehydrogenase (adh) enzymes obtained from the Zymomonas mobilis plasmid pLOI295. The Cyanobacteria are capable of producing ethanol in recoverable quantities of at least 1.7 μmol ethanol per mg of chlorophyll per hour.
Claims10
A process for producing ethanol which comprises the steps of:
- culturing in a culture medium Cyanobacteria and providing said Cyanobacteria with a source of carbon, said Cyanobacteria containing a construct comprising DNA fragments encoding pyruvate decarboxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes obtained from the Zymomonas mobilis pLOI295 plasmid;
- accumulating ethanol in the culture medium in an amount of approximately 1.7 μmol of ethanol per mg of chlorophyll per hour;
- and isolating the accumulated ethanol.
