Abstract
This invention relates to a method for preventing the ignition of molten magnesium by contacting the molten magnesium with a gaseous mixture comprising a fluorocarbon selected from the group consisting of perfluoroketones, hydrofluoroketones, and mixtures thereof.
Claims20
A method for treating molten reactive metal to protect said reactive metal from reacting with oxygen in air which comprises:
- providing molten reactive metal and exposing said reactive metal to a gaseous mixture comprising a fluorocarbon selected from the group consisting of perfluoroketones, hydrofluoroketones, and mixtures thereof.
A method for protecting molten reactive metal from reacting with oxygen in air, said reactive metal comprising an exposed surface, comprising:
- (a) providing molten reactive metal;
- (b) contacting said reactive metal with a gaseous mixture comprising a fluorocarbon selected from the group consisting of perfluoroketones, hydrofluoroketones, and mixtures thereof;
- and
- (c) forming a film on the surface of said reactive metal.
A method for extinguishing a fire on a surface of reactive metal comprising contacting a gaseous mixture comprising a fluorocarbon selected from the group consisting of perfluoroketones, hydrofluoroketones, and mixtures thereof with said surface.
