Abstract
An electrochernical cell comprising an anode of a Group IA metal and a cathode of a mixed phase metal oxide prepared from a combination of starting materials comprising vanadium oxide and a mixture of at least one of a decomposable silver-containing constituent and a decomposable copper-containing constituent is described. The starting materials are mixed together to form a homogeneous admixture that is not further mixed once decomposition heating begins. The resulting cathode material is particularly useful for implantable medical applications.
Claims14
A method for providing an electrochemical cell, which comprises:
- providing a casing;
- housing the electrochemical cell within the casing,
- comprising the steps of:
- a) providing an anode;
- b) providing a cathode, consisting essentially
- of the steps of:
- i) forming a substantially homogeneous admixture of starting materials comprising vanadium oxide and silver nitrate, wherein the homogeneous admixture is formed at a mixing temperature below a decomposition temperature of the homogeneous admixture;
- ii) heating the homogeneous admixture to the decomposition temperature without further mixing or stirring once decomposition begins;
- iii) cooling the thusly produced mixed phase metal oxide;
- and
- iv) contacting the mixed phase metal oxide to a current collector;
- and
- c) positioning the anode and the cathode inside the casing segregated from each other by a separator;
- and
- d) activating the anode and the cathode with an electrolyte filled in the casing.
A method for providing a cathode for an electrochemical cell, the cathode comprising a mixed phase metal oxide, which method consists essentially of the steps of:
- a) forming a substantially homogeneous admixture of starting materials comprising vanadium oxide and silver nitrate, wherein the homogeneous admixture is formed at a mixing temperature below a decomposition temperature of the homogeneous admixture;
- b) heating the homogeneous admixture to the decomposition temperature without further mixing or stirring once decomposition begins;
- and
- c) forming the mixed phase metal oxide into the cathode.
A method for providing a mixed phase metal oxide as a cathode active material, which method consists essentially of the steps of:
- a) forming a substantially homogeneous admixture of starting materials comprising vanadium oxide and silver nitrate, wherein the homogeneous admixture is formed at a mixing temperature below a decomposition temperature of the homogeneous admixture,
- b) heating the homogeneous admixture to the decomposition temperature without further mixing or stirring once decomposition begins;
- and
- c) utilizing the mixed phase metal oxide as a cathode active material.
