A method for producing L-glutamic acid which comprises culturing a microorganism belonging to the genus Klebsiella, Erwinia or Pantoea and having an ability to produce L-glutamic acid in a culture medium, and collecting produced L-glutamic acid from the culture medium. The microbial strain used is preferably a strain which decreases in or is deficient in an activity of an enzyme catalyzing a reaction branching from a pathway for L-glutamic acid biosynthesis and producing a compound other than L-glutamic acid, or a strain which increase in an activity of an enzyme catalyzing a reaction for L-glutamic acid biosynthesis.
A biologically pure culture of a microorganism belonging to the genus Erwinia or the genus Pantoea and having an ability to produce L-glutamic acid extracellularly, said microorganim having been modified so that the microorganism has an increased activity of an enzyme catalyzing a reaction for L-glutamic acid biosynthesis.
A biologically pure culture of a microorganism belonging to the genus Kiebsiella and having an ability to produce L-glutamic acid extracelluarly, said microorganism having been modified (1) so that the microorganism has an increased activity of an enzyme catalyzing a reaction for L-glutamic acid biosynthesis and (2) so that the microorganism has a decreased activity of, or is deficient in an activity of at least one enzyme selected from the group consisting of α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, isocitrate lyase, phosphate acetyltransferase, acetate kinase, acetohydroxy acid synthase, acetolactate synthase, formate acetyltransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, L-glutamate decarboxylase, and 1-pyrroline dehydrogenase.
The biologically pure culture of a microorganism according to claim ,11 which has been modified so that the microorganism has an increased activity of at least one selected from the group consisting of citrate synthase, phoshoenolpyruvate carboxylase, and glutamate dehydrogenase.
