Abstract
An automotive turbine regenerator system employs sectored matrix elements which are extruded and then assembled into the larger rotary regenerator. Discontinuous rotation is taught such that the seals are not rubbing seals but rather are clamping seals thus radically reducing the leakage and the wear on seal components.
Claims7
An engine comprising:
- a multiple-stage low-pressure-ratio turbine;
- a multiple-stage low-pressure-ratio compressor in operable communication with said turbine;
- a sectored rotary regenerator;
- means for discontinuously rotating the rotary regenerator;
- and
- a seal system having a plurality of seals in communication with said regenerator, said seal system releasing said seals from contact with said regenerator before said discontinuous movement of said regenerator and clamping said seals against said regenerator after said discontinuous movement of said regenerator has terminated.
