Abstract
A modular power node comprises modules containing components ultimately connectable to a load to modify power supplied to that load to make the power supplied to the load suitable therefor, the modules being shaped to conform to and contact one another to minimize node size by mutually supporting one another.
Claims42
An electrical power system comprising:
- a. a plurality of branches for carrying power including:
- i. branches for distributing power within said system to various loads;
- and
- ii. at least one branch for connection to a power supply;
- and
- b. at least one scalable standarized integrated multimodular multicomponent node, connecting said power supply branches and load branches, for selectably controlling power flow between said power supply and load branches by functionally controlling at least one parameter including voltage conversion, frequency conversion, voltage regulation, voltage inversion and voltage rectification, said node comprising:
- iii. a backplane having at least one bus bar for transporting functional power at least among modules of said node at the surface thereof and including a planar region adapted to accommodate a variety of different types and sizes of said modules, said modules including:
- (1) at least one control module for controlling performance of selected functions, having a generally planar side which means thereon for complementally electrically connecting and mechanically connecting and disconnecting said control module to and from at least one of said bus bars;
- and
- (2) at least one functional module for performing one or more of said functions responsively to input from said control module, having a first planar side with means thereon for complementally electrically connecting and mechanically connecting and disconnecting said functional module to and from said bus bar and having a second planar side complementally contacting said control module.

An electrical power system comprising:
- a. a plurality of branches for carrying power;
- b. said branches being interconnected at nodes;
- c. power supply means, connected to a branch, for supplying power for distribution with said system;
- d. at least one load, consuming power supplied thereto, connected to a branch other than said branch having said power supply means connected thereto;
- e. at least some of said node including:
- i. a backplane with bus bars at the backplane surface for transporting power between control means within said node;
- ii. programmable control means facingly complementally contacting said backplane for sensing power flow parameters between connected branches and taking protective action within a respective node in the event one or more sensed power flow parameters are outside of preselected limits and providing a sign for actuating corrective and/or protective means;
- iii. programmable control means facingly complementally contacting said backplane for sensing power flow parameters between connected branches and in response thereto regulating operational functions including at least one of the following:
- voltage conversion, frequency conversion, voltage regulation, voltage inversion and voltage rectification, for continued distribution of quality power within said system;
- iv. at least some of said programmable proactive action controls means and said programmable regulating operational function control means facingly complementally contacting one another.
