Abstract
A fiber Bragg grating is used to stabilize the intensity and frequency fluctuations of a diode laser. The diode laser is connected with an opto-mechanical apparatus to the fiber which contains the grating. The grating is formed in the guided-mode region of the optical fiber. The wavelength of maximum grating reflectivity is selected to lie near the maximum of the diode laser gain bandwidth. The magnitude and bandwidth of the grating reflectivity stabilizes the diode laser output without appreciably reducing the optical output power from the end of the fiber. The bandwidth of the optical spectrum of the diode laser is selected depending on the distance of the grating from the diode laser.

A stabilized laser source for a fiber amplifier or fiber laser comprising:
- a laser source having an optical cavity, which has an output facet from which is produced an output containing multiple longitudinal modes, with changes in longitudinal mode output of said laser source creating noise in the operation of the fiber amplifier, in the absence of a grating;
- an optical fiber external to said output facet and having one end thereof optically coupled through said output facet to said optical cavity;
- said optical fiber being optically coupled at its other end to the fiber amplifier or the fiber laser;
- and
- a fiber grating, located in said fiber, and which provides optical feedback to said laser source and causes the output of the laser source to be at a wavelength within an absorption band of the amplifier, said fiber grating being located in the fiber a distance from the laser source facet that provides incoherent optical feedback to the laser source, and causes coherence collapse operation in the laser source, and suppresses occurrence of noise due to said longitudinal mode changes in the output of the laser source in the absence of said grating.
A stabilized laser source comprising:
- a laser source having an optical cavity and having an output facet from which an output is produced;
- said facet comprising a first reflective element;
- an optical fiber external to said output facet and being optically coupled to the laser source optical cavity;
- a second reflective element in said optical fiber;
- characterized in that
- the second reflective element in said optical fiber has a reflectivity band and reflects a portion of the laser source output over a narrow band of wavelengths back into the laser source with the wavelength of maximum reflectivity of the second reflective element within the gain bandwidth of the laser source to provide incoherent light feedback into the laser source.
A stabilized laser source for a fiber amplifier comprising:
- a laser source having an optical cavity, which has an output facet from which is produced an output containing multiple longitudinal modes having an operating wavelength within a wavelength emission band, and wherein changes in longitudinal mode operation of said laser source create noise in the operation of the fiber amplifier in the absence of fiber grating;
- an optical fiber, having one end thereof external to said output facet and optically coupled to said optical cavity, and having another end thereof coupled to the fiber amplifier;
- a fiber grating, located in said fiber, and which provides feedback to said laser source, said fiber grating being positioned in the fiber a distance from the laser source output facet that provides incoherent feedback to the laser source and causes coherence collapse operation in the laser source, and suppresses the occurrence of noise due to said longitudinal mode operation changes in the operation of the laser source in the absence of said grating;
- and wherein
- said laser source operates under varying temperature conditions, and said grating provides optical feedback that stabilizes the operation of said laser within a narrow range of wavelengths despite said temperature variations, such that, in the absence of said grating, said operating wavelength shifts outside said narrow range of wavelengths.
Apparatus for generating a stable laser source comprising:
- a laser source having an optical cavity and having a gain band providing a light output;
- an optical fiber having an input end coupled to said laser source to receive said light output into said fiber;
- a grating formed in said optical fiber, and which partially reflects selected wavelengths within a reflectivity band back into said laser optical cavity, at least a portion of said laser source gain band overlapping with said reflectivity band;
- said fiber grating is sufficiently spaced from said laser source to induce multiple longitudinal mode operation of said laser source for enhancing optical spectrum stability and intensity;
- the overlap of the laser source gain band and the grating reflectivity band stabilizing the operational wavelength of said laser source over a range of operating conditions.
A stabilized semiconductor laser comprising:
- an optical fiber coupled to said laser;
- said fiber containing a fiber grating having a reflectivity which provides optical feedback to said laser;
- said feedback being within a band of wavelengths;
- the amount of reflectivity of said fiber causes said laser to operate in multiple longitudinal modes and lase within said band of wavelengths and substantially eliminates large fluctuations in wavelength of said laser caused by changes in laser temperature and current.
In a stabilized semiconductor laser comprising an optical fiber which is optically coupled to and receives the output from said laser, the improvement comprising:
- a fiber grating is located in said fiber and provides optical feedback to said laser that stabilizes the laser output, said fiber grating being located a distance less than a few meters from said laser with a bend radius not less than about ten centimeters that avoids stress induced in said fiber during operation of said laser.
A stabilized semiconductor laser comprising:
- a semiconductor laser coupled to an optical fiber containing a fiber grating, which reflects optical feedback to said laser, and causes said laser to generate an output in multiple longitudinal modes;
- said fiber grating having a relatively low reflectivity level that causes the output power from said fiber to be reduced by, at most, a few percent relative to that of a fiber not containing said fiber grating.
