Abstract
A flashlight with a rotatable lamp head is provided. The lamp head pivots about two cylindrical coaxial electrical connectors. The lamp head also includes reflector having a major parabolic reflective surface and a minor reflective parabolic surface. The reflector is configured so that the minor reflective surface is nested within the major reflective surface. The flashlight also includes a series of fluid-tight seals to insure that the flashlight is waterproof. In addition, a flapper valve is provided to function as a one-way valve allowing the release of gases produced by the use of the batters, and preventing fluid from entering the flashlight. A battery charger is also provided to recharge a battery pack for the flashlight.
Claims38
A rechargeable flashlight system, comprising:
- a flashlight comprising:
- a rechargeable battery pack having a first electrical contact;
- and
- a body configured to receive the rechargeable battery pack;
- wherein the battery pack is separable from the body;
- a charger configured to receive the flashlight and the battery pack, and operable to charge the battery pack when the battery pack is in the body and when the battery pack is separated from the body, comprising:
- a second contact in communication with an electrical source, wherein the second contact is cooperable with the first contact to provide an electrical path from the electrical source to the battery pack to charge the battery pack;
- a lock cooperable with the battery pack to releasably retain the battery pack in position in the charger so that the first contact is in the electrical path with the second contact.
A rechargeable flashlight system, comprising:
- a flashlight comprising:
- a rechargeable battery pack;
- a body configured to be connectable with the rechargeable battery pack;
- and
- a retaining surface on one of either the battery pack or the body;
- wherein the battery pack is separable from the body;
- a charger operable to charge the battery pack when the battery pack is connected with the body and when the battery pack is separated from the body, comprising:
- a lock co-operable with the retaining surface to releasably retain the one of the battery pack and the body in the charger to charge the battery pack.
A method for charging a battery pack of a rechargeable flashlight, comprising the steps of:
- providing a charger configured to cooperate with the flashlight and the battery pack;
- locking the flashlight in the charger so that the battery pack is in electrical communication with the charger;
- charging the battery pack while the flashlight is locked in the charger and the battery pack is connected with the flashlight;
- unlocking the flashlight to disengage the flashlight from the charger;
- using the flashlight to drain the battery;
- separating the battery pack from the flashlight;
- locking the separated battery pack in the charger so that the battery pack is in electrical communication with the charger;
- charging the battery pack while the battery pack is separated from the flashlight;
- and
- unlocking the battery pack to disengage the flashlight from the charger.
A method for charging a battery pack of a rechargeable flashlight, comprising the steps of:
- providing a charger having a socket configured to cooperate with the flashlight;
- inserting the flashlight in the socket so that the battery pack of the flashlight is in electrical communication with the charger, wherein the step of inserting the flashlight into the socket pivots a lock so that the flashlight is locked in the socket;
- charging the battery pack while the flashlight is locked in the charger and the battery pack is connected with the flashlight;
- pivoting the lock to unlock the flashlight;
- removing the unlocked flashlight from the socket.
A rechargeable flashlight system, comprising:
- a flashlight having a housing configured to receive a rechargeable battery assembly therein, the flashlight having a lamp positioned at a forward portion and having a rear portion, the flashlight further having a flashlight charging contact;
- a charger having a housing formed to provide a receptacle extending vertically to receive the rear portion of the flashlight and having a charger contact located in the receptacle to connect with the flashlight charging contact to charge the rechargable battery assembly;
- wherein the charger comprises:
- a latching assembly including a lever arm pivotally mounted on the charger housing to engage and hold the flashlight in the receptacle, the latching assembly having an actuator for operating the lever arm to release the flashlight.
The rechargeable flashlight system of 28 wherein the flashlight comprises a rim formed in the rear portion of the body for receiving an end of the lever arm of the latching assembly for holding the flashlight in the charger.
The rechargeable flashlight system of 28 wherein the rechargeable battery assembly comprises a case for holding a plurality of rechargeable battery cells, the case configured for insertion into the rear end of the flashlight, and the case having a closed end forming a rear surface of the flashlight when the battery assembly is inserted into the flashlight.
The rechargeable flashlight system of 32 wherein the closed end of the case comprises a compressible seal member for sealing the rear end of the flashlight.
The rechargeable flashlight system of 28 wherein the latching assembly includes a spring for urging one end of the lever arm into engagement with the flashlight when it is inserted into the charger;
- and wherein the actuator is operable to counteract the spring to release the flashlight from the charger.
A rechargeable flashlight system, comprising:
- a rechargeable battery assembly having a latch engagement surface and a flashlight charging contact thereon;
- a flashlight configured to receive the battery therein, the flashlight having a body with a lamp positioned at a forward portion and having a rear portion;
- a charger having a housing formed to provide a receptacle extending vertically to receive the battery, and having a charger contact located in the receptacle to connect with the flashlight charging contact;
- wherein the charger comprises:
- a latching assembly including a fever arm pivotally mounted therein to engage and hold the battery in the receptacle, one end of the lever arm positioned in the receptacle for engaging the latch engagement surface of the battery, and having an actuator for operating the lever arm to release the lever arm from the engagement surface of the battery.
The rechargeable flashlight system of 35 wherein the rechargeable battery assembly comprises a case for holding a plurality of rechargeable battery cells, the case configured for insertion into the rear portion of the flashlight, and the case having a closed end forming a rear surface of the flashlight when the battery assembly is inserted in the flashlight.
The rechargeable flashlight system of 36 wherein the latch engagement surface comprises an abutment surface formed in the case for receiving said end of the lever arm.
The rechargeable flashlight system of 37 wherein the latching assembly comprises a spring compressed between the lever arm and the charger housing for urging said end of the lever arm into engagement with the battery assembly.
