Abstract
Disclosed is a 2-amino-5-acylamino-4-substituted-phenol compound having the structural formula I: wherein Y is a substituent group, and R′ is a ballast group. Also disclosed is a simplified method for preparing a photographic coupler using this compound.

A 2-amino-5-acylamino-4-substituted-phenol compound having the structural formula I:
- wherein
- Y is an aryloxy, arylthio, arylsulfonyl, or heterocyclic group, and
- R′ is an alkyl or aryl group containing a total of 8-30 carbon atoms.
