Abstract
The surface of a device that is surgically implantable in living bone is prepared. The device is made of titanium with a native oxide layer on the surface. The method of preparation comprises the steps of removing the native oxide layer from the surface of the device and performing further treatment of the surface substantially in the absence of unreacted oxygen.
Claims42
A method of preparing a surface of a device that is surgically implantable in living bone, said device being made of titanium and having a native oxide layer on said surface, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) removing said native oxide layer from said surface of said device until the depth of the peak-to-peak oxygen profile as measured by Auger spectrometer has decreased to one-half of the initial profile, and
- (b) after said removing, performing a roughening treatment on the surface resulting from said removing to produce a roughened surface with a substantially uniform array of irregularities.
A method of preparing a surface of a dental implant that is to be surgically implanted in living bone, said dental implant being made of titanium and having a native oxide layer on said surface, said dental implant having a bone-interfacing portion on which said surface resides, a thread making a plurality of turns around said bone-interfacing portion, and a gingival end above said bone-interfacing portion, said gingival end for mating with abutting components, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) removing substantially all of said native oxide from said surface of said dental implant to produce a substantially oxide-free surface, and
- (b) performing further treatment on said substantially oxide-free surface to produce a modified—surface with a substantially uniform array of irregularities having peak-to-valley heights less than 10 microns, said modified surface being located only on a portion of said plurality of turns of said thread.
A method of preparing a surface of a dental implant—that is to be surgically implanted in living bone, said dental implant being made of titanium and having a native oxide layer on said surface, said surface of said dental implant having a threaded portion with a thread making a plurality of turns around said threaded portion, and a gingival end above said threaded portion, said gingival end for mating with abutting components, said method comprising the steps of:
- performing a first treatment that removes native oxide from said surface;
- performing a second treatment, different from said first treatment, to produce a further roughened surface with a substantially uniform array of irregularities having peak-to-valley heights less than 10 microns.
A method of preparing a threaded surface of a titanium dental implant that is surgically implantable in living bone, said threaded surface having a native oxide layer thereon, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) performing an initial treatment on said threaded surface to expose titanium that is located below said native oxide layer;
- and
- (b) after performing said initial treatment, performing a further roughening treatment on the exposed titanium to produce a roughened surface with an array of cone-shaped irregularities having peak-to-valley heights of less than 10 microns.
