Abstract
A synthetic, semi-crystalline, porous inorganic oxide composition containing a reactive organic silane moiety which on the surface of pore walls. The composition is prepared from a poly(oxyalkylene) based surfactant and a hydrolyzable organic silane. The surfactant is preferably a poly (ethylene) oxide, a poly(propylene) oxide polymer or mixtures thereof. The organic silane is preferably mercaptopropylsilane. The compositions are particularly useful as adsorbents, and catalysts.

A porous synthetic, semi-crystalline inorganic oxide composition with an organic group of 1 to 25 carbon atoms linked through a silicon carbon bond to a surface of walls forming pores and prepared by a method comprising reacting an inorganic oxide precursor with a hydrolyzable organic silicon compound, selected from the group consisting of an alkoxide and a halide with the organic group linked to the silicon, in the presence of water and a structure-directing template which comprises a nonionic poly(oxyalkylene) based surfactant having a terminal hydroxyl group and an internal amino group or the surfactant having a polyethylene oxide and propylene oxide as a block polymer providing a hydrophobic and hydrophilic moiety, wherein the template is removable with an organic solvent or hot water, the composition comprising the template and water and having framework confined pores between about 1 and 35 nm, and a surface area after the template has been removed between 100 and 1500 m2/gm and with the hydrolyzed organic silane moiety incorporated into the framework pore walls so that the organic group is on the surface of the walls forming the pores linked to the silicon, wherein the organic group further comprises one or more functional groups selected from the group consisting of a metal, vinyl, cyano, amino, epoxide, mercapto, a halogen, an aldehyde, a ketone, an acid, a base, dye chromophore, complexant for metal, metal complex with cyclodextrin, and combinations thereof.
A porous synthetic, semi-crystalline hybrid organic-inorganic silicon oxide composition with an organic group of 1 to 25 carbon atoms linked through a silicon carbon bond to a surface of walls forming pores prepared by a method comprising reacting an inorganic silicon oxide precursor and a hydrolyzable organic silicon compound selected from the group consisting of an alkoxide and a halide with the organic group linked to the silicon in the presence of water and structure-directing template which is a nonionic poly(oxyalkylene) based polymer surfactant having a terminal hydroxyl group and an internal amino group or a surfactant having a polyethylene oxide and propylene oxide as a block polymer providing a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic moiety wherein the surfactant is removable from the composition, the composition comprising the template and having framework confined pores between 1 and 35 nm in diameter, a specific surface area after the template has been removed of between 100 and 1500 m2/g, and with the hydrolyzed organic silane moiety incorporated into the framework pore walls so that the organic group is on the surface of the walls forming the pores linked to the silicon, wherein the organic group further comprises one or more functional groups selected from the group consisting of a metal, vinyl, cyano, amino, epoxide, mercapto, a halogen, a hydroxide, an aldehyde, a ketone, an acid, a base, dye chromophore, complexant for metal, metal complex with cyclodextrin, and combinations thereof.
A porous synthetic, semi-crystalline hybrid organic-inorganic silicon oxide composition with an organic group of 1 to 25 carbon atoms linked through a silicon carbon bond to a surface of walls forming pores and prepared by a method comprising reacting a mixture of an inorganic silicon oxide precursor, a nonionic poly(oxyalkylene) polymer based surfactant selected from the group consisting of poly(Propylene) oxide polymers and mixtures of poly(ethylene) oxide with poly(propylene) oxide, as a structure-directing template, and a hydrolyzable organic silicon compound selected from the group consisting of an alkoxide and a halide with the organic group linked to the silicon in the presence of a non-protic organic solvent containing water to provide the composition comprising the non-protic organic solvent and the template and with the organic silane moiety incorporated into the framework pore walls so that the organic group is on the surface of the walls forming the pores linked to the silicon, wherein the organic group further comprises one or more functional groups selected from the group consisting of a metal, vinyl, cyano, amino, epoxide, mercapto, a halogen, a hydroxide, an aldehyde, a ketone, an acid, a base and combinations thereof.
