Abstract
An optical device in which a waveguide is mounted on an optical substrate in turn supported on a base substrate. The base substrate is provided with an optical fiber positioning groove into which an optical fiber is fixed so that a center of the fiber lies in a plane substantially coplanar with a plane of the waveguide.
Claims45
A method for producing an optical device comprising:
- forming on at least one optical substrate at least one waveguide having a center which lies in a waveguide plane;
- fixing said at least one optical substrate onto a base substrate and defining on said base substrate at least one optical fiber positioning groove;
- and
- fixing at least one optical fiber in said at least one optical fiber positioning groove on said base substrate, whereby a center of said at least one optical fiber lies in a plane which is substantially coplanar with said waveguide plane.

An optical device comprising:
- at least one optical substrate having formed thereon at least one waveguide having a center which lies in a waveguide plane;
- a base substrate onto which said at least one optical substrate is fixed, said base substrate defining at least one optical fiber positioning groove;
- and
- at least one optical fiber fixed to said at least one optical fiber positioning groove on said base substrate, such that a center of said at least one optical fiber lies in a plane which is substantially coplanar with said waveguide plane.
