Abstract
A stretchable tape includes a nonextensible layer having a separation line, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, an extensible layer and an adhesive inhibiting masking between adjacent portions of the extensible layer and adhesive layer to enable relative movement and tape stretchability. The tape is especially useful in the manufacture of diaper tabs. The tape stock and diaper tabs may be manufactured using conventional web processing equipment.

A method of manufacturing stretchable tape stock comprising the steps of feeding a nonextensible layer along a manufacturing line, combining a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive with said nonextensible layer, applying a patterned adhesive-inhibiting masking to define a masking pattern comprising at least one continuous line extending along a face of said adhesive, and applying an extensible layer over at least a part of said continuous masking line to inhibit adhesion and enable relative movement between said extensible layer and adhesive layer.
A method of manufacturing transfer tape stock for use in making stretchable tape comprising the steps of feeding a first substrate along a manufacturing line, combining a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive with a first face of said substrate, applying to said layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive a patterned adhesive-inhibiting masking to define a masking pattern comprising at least one continuous line, combing said at least one continuous line of masking with an extensible layer, and further processing said transfer tape stock by releasably combining the side of said pressure-sensitive adhesive layer bearing said masking and extensible layer against a second substrate face, said second substrate face comprising the other face of said first-named substrate to thereby produce a self-wound transfer tape stock or comprising the face of an additional substrate to thereby produce a multi-substrate transfer tape stock.
