Abstract
A method for automatedly administering an audiometric test includes the steps of controlling an audiometer to selectively switch the audiometer output between test tones generated by the audiometer and sound signals generated from digital information; first switching the audiometer output to sound signals when the step of controlling indicates a beginning of a new test, a completion of a current test, or a test error; outputting sound representative of the sound signals after the step of first switching; second switching the audiometer output to test tones after the step of outputting; and outputting test tones until the next step of first switching.
Claims21
A method of performing a diagnostic test with an audiometer and a computer, comprising:
- outputting sound signals generated from digital information of the computer;
- outputting test signals generated by the audiometer according to a pre-programmed logic sequence;
- receiving input signals from a test subject in response to the outputting test signals;
- monitoring the input signals from the test subject;
- detecting an error in the input signals from the test subject by the computer;
- selecting an appropriate sound signal via the computer from the digital information of the computer to provide corrective instruction to the test subject to address the detected error;
- switching between outputting test signals and outputting sound signals when an error is detected to deliver the corrective instruction to the test subject and then to continue outputting test signals;
- and
- controlling the switching with the computer.
A multimedia audiometer testing device, responsive to a test subject's input, comprising:
- a test signal generator that creates test signals;
- a memory for storing data representing a group of human perceivable instructions;
- a processor communicatively connected to the memory and the test signal generator, the processor monitors the test subject's input, detects when an error has occurred in the test subject's input, selects one of the instructions from the group of instructions in response to the detected error, and converts the selected instruction to a human perceivable form;
- means for selectively outputting either the test signals created by the test signal generator or the selected instruction converted to a human perceivable form.
A multimedia audiometer, comprising:
- a test signal generator that delivers a test tone to a test subject and comprises a sine wave generator, a frequency selector, an attenuator, an amplifier, and a pulse control;
- an input device for use by the test subject to generate an input in response to the test tone;
- a memory device that stores digital data representing a group of sound signals that provide different instructions to the test subject to address different error situations created by the test subject;
- and
- a processor communicatively connected to the memory device and the test signal generator to monitor the status of the input device and control the test signal generator to continue to deliver the test tones according to a logical testing procedure in response to the input from the test subject and to interrupt the delivery of the test tones by the test signal generator when the status of the input device indicates an error has occurred, wherein the processor then locates and delivers an instruction responsive to the error to the test subject from the group of sound signals to address the error with the test subject before continuing to deliver the test tones.
A method of performing a diagnostic test protocol, comprising the steps of:
- outputting a series of initial instructions to a test subject;
- generating a series of test signals;
- delivering the test signals to the test subject;
- monitoring an input from the test subject provided in response to the test signal with a processor;
- detecting whether an error has occurred in the input from the test subject with the processor;
- generating a corrective instruction that is responsive to the detected error when an error is detected automatically with the processor;
- delivering the corrective instruction to the test subject when an error is detected;
- and
- continuing the delivery of test signals to the test subject.
A diagnostic instrument, responsive to a test subject's input, comprising:
- a test signal generator that delivers a test tone to the test subject, and
- a processor for controlling the test signal generator to perform a pre-programmed test sequence with automatic error correction according to select logical testing procedures responsive to the subject's input.
A method of performing a diagnostic test protocol, comprising the steps of:
- performing a test by outputting test tones to an earphone and monitoring a test subject's responses;
- detecting an error condition based on the responses;
- automatically delivering to the earphone audible corrective instruction based on the error condition detected;
- and
- resuming the test by outputting test tones.
