Abstract
A bicycle pedal system including a cleat attached to a rider's shoe, and a pedal including a pedal body and, in one embodiment, two spring plates, each formed from spring-tempered steel and shaped with a flat portion attached to the pedal body and arms extending to form the mechanisms for clamping both edges of the cleat engaging the opposite side of the pedal. Using spring-tempered steel allows the clamping mechanism itself to flex.
Claims12
A clipless bicycle pedal system comprising
- a cleat having a plurality of edges and engagement portions on at least two of said edges such that said engagement portions are spaced from one another a first given distance;
- a pedal including a pedal body and at least one plate, said pedal body having a first side defining a first plane and a second side generally opposite said first side and defining a second plane;
- means attaching said plate to said first side of said pedal body;
- said plate having a central portion generally proximate to said first plane and a plurality of arm portions, said arm portions extending away from said central portion toward said second plane, said arm portions each terminating in an end portion generally proximate to said second plane, said end portions being moveable away from one another upon application of a given force, said arm portions extending away from said central portion so as to form a means for engaging said cleat on the side of said pedal body generally opposite said first plane when said cleat is engaged with said second side of said pedal body, said clipless pedal system including means to adjust the resiliency of said spring plate.

A spring plate for a bicycle pedal body with opposed sides, one being the first side and the other being the second side of the pedal body;
- said spring plate having a mid-portion and two arm portions, said arm portions being sized and shaped, relative to the pedal body, to when said mid-portion is attached to said first side of said pedal body extend around said pedal body and terminate in two end portions generally opposed to one another, said end portions being spaced from said second side of said pedal body sufficiently to receive a cleat between the end portions and thereby to attach the pedal body to a bicycle rider's shoe,
- the resiliency of the spring plate being sufficient to hold the cleat to the pedal body during normal pedaling of the bicycle;
- the end portions of the arms being shaped to cooperate with the cleat and to removably attach the cleat to the pedal body;
- and the pedal including means to adjust the resiliency of said spring plate.
