Abstract
A class of superconductive materials containing copper-oxygen bonding and with mixed cation-occupancy designed with a view to size and valence consideration yield useful values of critical temperature and other properties. Uses entail all applications which involves superconducting materials such as magnets and transmission lines which require continuous superconductivity paths as well as detectors (e.g., which may rely on tunneling).
Claims19
A superconducting element comprising at least one composition which is at least one of the nominally quaternary or substituted quaternary copper oxides of the nominal formula M2M′Cu3O9−d wherein:
- (a) M ions are essentially divalent and M includes at least some Ba;
- (b) M′ ions are essentially trivalent and M′ includes at least one element selected from Y, La, Eu, and Lu;
- (c) divergence from the nominal formula amounts of M and M′ is a maximum of 10 at. %;
- (d) d is at least 1;
- and
- (e) at least 95 mole percent of said composition is of a single phase nominally of the perovskite structure and exhibits 0 electrical resistance at a temperature of 72K or above.
