Abstract
The present invention relates to new methods for the synthesis of torsemide and the torsemide synthetic intermediate, (3-sulfonylchloride-4-chloro)pyridine.

A process for making a compound of the formula
- comprising the steps of:
- (a) adding a compound of the formula
- to an organic solvent to form a mixture;
- (b) adding ammonia to the mixture in step (a);
- and
- (c) isolating the compound of the formula
- wherein X1 and X2 are each independently chloro, fluoro or bromo.

A process for making (3-sulfonamide-4-chloro)pyridine comprising the steps of:
- (a) adding (3-sulfonylchloride-4-chloro)pyridine to an organic solvent to form a mixture;
- (b) adding ammonia to the mixture in step (a);
- and
- (c) isolating (3-sulfonamide-4-chloro)pyridine.
