Provided is an aerosol method, and accompanying apparatus, for preparing powdered products of a variety of materials involving the use of an ultrasonic aerosol generator (106) including a plurality of ultrasonic transducers (120) underlying and ultrasonically energizing a reservoir of liquid feed (102) which forms droplets of the aerosol. Carrier gas (104) is delivered to different portions of the reservoir by a plurality of gas delivery ports (136) delivering gas from a gas delivery system. The aerosol is pyrolyzed to form particles, which are then cooled and collected. The invention also provides powders made by the method and devices made using the powders.
A particulate product comprising multi-phase particles including at least two different material phases, a first material phase being metallic, and comprising as a first component a metal in a metallic form, a second material phase being nonmetallic and and comprising as a second component elemental carbon, the particulate product characterized in that said multi-phase particles have a weight average particle size of from about 0.1 micron to about 4 microns and said multi-phase particles comprise a third component that is different than the metal and the carbon.
The particulate product of any one of claims 1, 4, 5, 6, 12, 1718 and 20, wherein said metal is platinum.
The particulate product of any one of claims 1, 4, 56, 12, 17, 18, and 20 wherein said metal is derived from thermal decomposition of at least a first precursor comprising a compound including said metal.
The particulate product of any one of claims 1, 4, 56, 12, 17, 18 and 20 wherein the multi-phase particles comprise an additional phase, in addition to said first material phase and said second material phase, said additional material phase comprising the third component.
