Abstract
A process for producing polypropylene having increased melt strength, the process comprising irradiating polypropylene with an electron beam having an energy of at least 5 MeV and with a radiation dose of from 5 to 100 kGray in the presence of a grafting agent for forming long chain branches on the polypropylene molecules.
Claims18
A process for production of polypropylene having an enhanced melt strength comprising:
- (a) formulating a mixture of polypropylene fluff and a grafting agent in a bed,
- (b) providing an electron beam having an energy of at least 5 MeV, and
- (c) providing for movement of said bed of polypropylene fluff grafting agent mixture relative to said electron beam to provide a radiation dose of from 5-100 kGray to form long chain branches on the molecules of said polypropylene to produce a melt strength greater than the melt strength of said polypropylene fluff which has been correspondingly treated in the absence of said grafting agent.
A process for producing polypropylene having increased melt strength, the process comprising irradiating polypropylene with an electron beam having an energy of at least 5 MeV and with a radiation dose of from 5 to 100 kgray in the presence of a grafting agent for forming long chain branches on the polypropylene molecules, said grafting agent comprising tetravinyl silane.
A process for producing polypropylene having increased melt strength, the process comprising irradiating polypropylene with an electron beam having an energy of at least 5 MeV and with a radiation dose of from 5 to 100 kGray in the presence of a grafting agent for forming long chain branches on the polypropylene molecules wherein during irradiation of the polypropylene the polypropylene is conveyed past the electron beam at a speed of from 0.5 to 20 meters/minute.
