Abstract
An intumescent polymer composition includes a matrix polymer, an acid catalyst source, a nitrogen source and an ionic phyllosilicate synergist having substantial cationic exchange capacity. Particularly preferred ionic phyllosilicates are montmorillonoids whereas pentaerythritol phosphate is a preferred acid catalyst source:
Claims23
An intumescent polymer composition comprising:
- (a) a matrix polyolefin composition;
- (b) an acid catalyst source;
- (c) a nitrogen source;
- and
- (d) a montmorrillonoid ionic phyllosilicate in an amount of from about 0.3 to about 1.5 weight percent of said composition, said ionic phyllosilicate having a cationic exchange capacity of at least about 5 meq per 100 g thereof and said ionic phyllosilicate being capable of synergizing the intumescence of said composition.
