Abstract
A method of grain refining cast magnesium alloy includes adding to a magnesium alloy melt containing aluminum and manganese, pure carbon powder, or a carbon source in combination with niobium pentoxide or vanadium pentoxide.
Claims14
A method of grain refining cast magnesium alloy comprising:
- adding a carbon source in combination with niobium pentoxide, Nb2O5, or vanadium pentoxide, V2O5, to a magnesium alloy melt containing aluminum and manganese, wherein the niobium pentoxide or vanadium pentoxide is added to the melt in an amount that is from 0.1 to 3% by weight of an amount of the melt at a temperature of from 993 to 1073 K.
