A detergent composition comprising: (a) a surfactant selected from the group consisting of an anionic surfactant, a nonionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, a zwitterionic surfactant, and mixtures thereof; (b) a cationic polymer; and (c) a phosphate.

A detergent composition comprising:
- (a) a surfactant selected from the group consisting of an anionic surfactant, a nonionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, a zwitterionic surfactant, and mixtures thereof;
- (b) from about 2 to 15% by weight, based on the weight of the composition, of a cationic polymer;
- and
- (c) a phosphate.

A process for cleaning and softening textiles comprising contacting textiles with a cleaning solution containing water and a detergent composition, the detergent composition comprising:
- (a) a surfactant selected from the group consisting of an anionic surfactant, a nonionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, a zwitterionic surfactant, and mixtures thereof;
- (b) from about 2 to 15% by weight, based on the weight of the composition, of a cationic polymer;
- and
- (c) a phosphate.
