The present invention is directed to improved regulation multi-layer golf balls. A smaller and lighter core is produced and metal particles, or other heavy weight filler materials, are included in the cover compositions. The resulting molded golf ball exhibits enhanced interior perimeter weighting. Preferably, the particles are included in a relatively thick inner cover layer (or mantle) of a solid, three-piece multi-layered golf ball. The size and weight of the core is reduced in order to produce an overall golf ball which meets, or is less than, the 1.62 ounce maximum weight limitation specified by the United States Golf Association. The combination of the present invention produces a golf ball with an increased moment of inertia and/or a greater radius of gyration and thus generates lower spin. This results in a golf ball exhibiting enhanced distance without substantially effecting the feel and durability characteristics of the ball.
A multi-layer golf ball, having a moment of inertia from about 0.390 oz. in.2 (71.33 g/cm2) to about 0.480 oz. in.2 (87.79 g/cm2), comprising a core, an inner cover layer and an outer cover layer having a dimpled surface, wherein said core has a diameter from about 1.28 to 1.57 inches (3.25 cm to 3.98 cm) and a weight of 18 to 38.7 grams (0.634 to 1.36 ounces), said inner cover layer has a thickness of from 0.01 to 0.200 inches (0.0254 cm to 0.508 cm), a Shore D hardness of 65 or more, and a weight, with core, of 32.2 to 44.5 grains (1.16 to 1.57 ounces) and said outer cover layer has a thickness of from 0.01 to 0.110 inches (0.0254 cm to 0.2794 cm) and a weight, with core and inner cover layer, of 45.0 to 45.93 grams (1.59 to 1.62 ounces).
