Abstract
A high pressure transfer device has a rotor mounted in a housing for rotation with respect to inlet and outlet ports and having through going pockets. The pockets have interior surface configurations substantially devoid of nooks, crannies, and related flow restrictions. This can be accomplished by providing inserts in the pockets, or by constructing the pockets so that there are substantially smooth interior wall tubes extending from one end of the rotor and the other and cooperating with an inlet and an outlet at the same time. Using the high pressure transfer device to feed wood chips or the like in a slurry using a high pressure transfer pump can result in flow through the rotor pockets that is more uniform by at least 5% compared to in conventional high pressure transfer devices.
Claims17
A high pressure transfer device comprising:
- a pocketed rotor containing a plurality of through going pockets, said rotor rotatable about a given axis of rotation and said pockets having opposite end openings which function as both inlets and outlets depending upon an angular position of the rotor within the device, and said pockets are provided in at least first and second sets;
- a housing enclosing said rotor, said housing having an exterior periphery and first through fourth ports disposed around the exterior periphery thereof for registry with the inlets to and outlets from said through going pockets,
- for each set, said first port being opposite said third port and said second port opposite said fourth port;
- said rotor mounted in said housing for rotation with respect to said ports about said given axis of rotation;
- and
- said pockets having each forming an interior passage through the rotor and extending between the end openings, the passage for each pocket is substantially uniform in cross-sectional area, where the cross-sectional area is transverse to an axis of the passage extending between the opposite end openings.
A transfer device comprising:
- a pocketed rotor containing a plurality of through going pockets, said rotor rotatable about a given axis of rotation and said pockets having opposite end openings which function as both inlets and outlets depending upon an angular position of the rotor within the device, and said pockets are provided in at least first and second sets;
- a housing enclosing said rotor, said housing having an exterior periphery and first through fourth ports disposed around the exterior periphery thereof for registry with the inlets to and outlets from said through going pockets,
- for each set, said first port being opposite said third port, and said second port opposite said fourth port;
- said rotor mounted in said housing for rotation with respect to said ports about said given axis of rotation;
- and
- said pockets each having an interior surface defining a passage, and each passage having a substantially uniform cross-sectional area along a passage axis extending between the opposite end openings.
A high pressure transfer device comprising:
- a pocketed rotor containing a plurality of through going pockets, said rotor rotatable about a given axis of rotation and said pockets having opposite end openings which function as both inlets and outlets depending upon an angular position of the rotor within the device, and said pockets are provided in at least first and second sets, with the pockets in each set offset from the pockets in the at least one other set;
- a housing enclosing said rotor, said housing having an exterior periphery and first through fourth ports disposed around the exterior periphery thereof for registry with the inlets to and outlets from said through going pockets, for each set;
- for each set said first port being opposite said third port;
- and said second port opposite said fourth port;
- said rotor mounted in said housing for rotation with respect to said ports about said given axis of rotation;
- and
- said pockets defined by substantially smooth interior wall tubes, wherein said tubes have a cross sectional shape that is substantially devoid of abrupt changes through the pocket, and said cross-sectional shape has a substantially uniform area along an axis of the tube.
A rotary high pressure feeder for processing cellulosic fibrous material comprising:
- a rotor rotatable about an axis and comprising a first pocket and a second pocket, said first pocket and second pocket each comprising a conduit extending through the rotor and having end openings at opposite ends of the pocket, wherein each of said conduits are substantially straight and uniform in cross-sectional area along an axis of the conduits extending between the end openings, and wherein each of said end openings of each pocket functions as both an inlet and outlet depending upon an angular position of the rotor within a housing;
- the housing encloses said rotor and said housing comprises an exterior periphery and first through fourth ports disposed around the exterior periphery thereof for registry with the end openings of said first and second pockets, and
- said rotor mounted in said housing for rotation with respect to said ports about said axis, wherein said the end openings of first pocket align with the first and third ports when said end openings of the second pocket align with the second and fourth ports.
