Neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, can be treated or prevented by administering an effective amount of triflusal or its metabolite, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or a prodrug thereof.

A method for the treatment or prevention of a neurodegenerative disease in a warm-blooded animal in need thereof, comprising administering to said animal an effective amount of a compound of formula I

A method for the treatment or prevention of Alzheimer's disease in a human in need thereof which comprises administering to said human an effective amount of a compound of formula I
