A liquid crystal display cell comprising:
- an oriented liquid crystal layer disposed between two plates;
- an orientation layer disposed on an inner side of at least one of said plates adjacent the liquid crystal layer, wherein the orientation layer aligns adjacent liquid crystal molecules in predetermined azimuthal and tilt directions, the orientation layer comprising a material to which an orienting property has been contactlessly imparted;
- and
- wherein the orienting property has been imparted by exposure to polarized light.
A liquid crystal display cell comprising:

- and an orientation layer disposed on an inner side of at least one of said plates adjacent the liquid crystal layer, wherein the orientation layer aligns adjacent liquid crystal molecules in predetermined azimuthal and tilt directions,
- the orientation layer comprising a material which has a property of being responsive to polarized light, said property being that exposure to a single beam of polarized light induces an orientation direction and tilt angle to the material.
A liquid crystal display cell comprising:
- an oriented liquid crystal layer disposed between two plates;
- and
- an orientation layer disposed on an inner side of at least one of said plates adjacent the liquid crystal layer, wherein the orientation layer aligns adjacent liquid crystal molecules in predetermined azimuthal and tilt directions, the orientation layer comprising a material that is responsive to polarized light, and which was exposed to polarized light,

A liquid crystal display cell comprising:
- an oriented liquid crystal layer disposed between two plates;
- and
- an orientation layer disposed on an inner side of at least one of said plates adjacent the liquid crystal layer, wherein the orientation layer aligns adjacent liquid crystal molecules in predetermined azimuthal and tilt directions, the orientation layer comprising a material that is responsive to polarized light;
- wherein a first portion of the material has been exposed through a mask to polarized light such as to induce a first orientation direction and a first tilt angle to the first portion of the material;
- and
- wherein, after removal of said mask, the first portion of the material and a second portion of the material are exposed to polarized light to induce a second orientation direction and a second tilt angle to the second portion of the material.
A liquid crystal display cell comprising:
