Abstract
Iron binding polymers are provided for decreasing the absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract. The polymers are orally administered, and are useful for treatment of iron overload disorders.
Claims6
A method of removing iron from a patient comprising orally administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a polymer characterized by a repeat unit having the formula
- or a heteropolymer thereof;
- wherein n is an integer;
- R1 is hydrogen or methyl;
- L is —C(O)Z— or —(CH2)m—NR3—;
- Z is O or NR3;
- R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl group;
- R4, R5, and R6 are, independently, hydrogen or methyl;
- m is 0-2 and p=2-10.
A method of removing iron from a patient comprising orally administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a polymer characterized by a repeat unit having the formula
- or a heteropolymer thereof;
- wherein n is an integer;
- R1 is a hydrogen or methyl;
- R4, R5, and R6 are, independently, hydrogen or methyl;
- and p=0-2.
A method of removing iron from a patient comprising orally administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a polymer characterized by a repeat unit having the formula
- or a copolymer thereof, wherein n is an integer;
- R1 is a hydrogen or a C1-C20 alkyl group;
- L is —NH— or
- G is
- and each R2, R3, and R4, independently is hydrogen, a C1-C20 alkyl group, or an aryl group.
