Abstract
A center justified pin registration system uses a plurality of pairs of registration pins having different thickness heads to align an edge of a printing plate when mounting the plate to a drum of an imaging system. The registration pins are optionally adjustable. The registration system avoids the requirement to punch holes or notches in a printing plate and does not require adjusting the thickness of a common registration pin. The registration system allows printing plates having different widths to be mounted without necessitating adjustments of the registration pins. An alternate embodiment employs a plurality of pairs of registration pins having uniform thickness heads.
Claims31
An apparatus for registering a printing plate, using center justification, on a support surface of an external drum platesetter comprising:
- a plurality of pairs of registration pins for contacting a leading edge of the printing plate;
- and
- a leading edge clamping mechanism for holding the leading edge of the printing plate against the support surface of the external drum.
An apparatus, comprising:
- a registration system for registering different size printing plates, having at least two pairs of registration pins, such that only one pair of the registration pins contact an edge of each different size printing plate.
A registration method, comprising:
- providing at least two pairs of registration pins;
- and
- registering different size printing plates using said pairs of registration pins, such that only one pair of the registration pins contact a leading edge of each different size printing plate.
An apparatus for holding an edge of a printing plate onto a support surface of an external drum platesetter, said apparatus being generally free from forces that increase a clamping force exerted upon said plate by said apparatus as a result of a rotational action of the drum, said apparatus comprising:
- a rotatable external drum member having a cylindrical support surface for supporting said printing plate thereon;
- a groove axially formed into said support surface having a plurality of mounting locations for attaching at least one clamping assembly;
- at least one clamp assembly mounted to an inside surface of said groove, said clamp assembly operative to hold a leading edge of said plate against said support surface with a clamping force generally free from additional force derived from a centrifugal effect acting upon said clamp assembly when said drum is rotated;
- an actuator operative to cause an end of any of said at least one clamp assembly to pivot radially outward to a first position causing a gap to be created between a portion of said clamp assembly and said support surface whereas a plate may be inserted into, or removed from said gap;
- and
- said clamp assembly comprising:
- a mounting portion attached to an inside surface of said groove for providing a pivot axis generally parallel to a spin axis of said drum;
- a clamping portion pivotally attached to said mounting portion, said clamping portion having a distal end and a posterior end;
- at least one spring operatively coupled to said clamping portion, said at least one spring imparting a force upon said clamping portion causing said clamping portion to rotate about said pivot axis to a second position whereas said plate is captured between said support surface and said distal end;
- a separate counterweight removablely attached to said distal end of said clamping portion operative to cause a center of gravity of said clamping portion to be located at said pivot axis;
- and
- wherein said counterweight is manufactured from a first material having a density greater than a second material, said second material used to manufacture a remaining portion of said clamping portion.
An apparatus for holding an edge of a printing plate onto a support surface of a rotatable external drum platesetter, said apparatus being generally free from forces that vary a clamping force exerted upon said plate by said apparatus as a result of a rotational action of the drum, said apparatus comprising:
- at least one clamp assembly mounted to an inside surface of a groove longitudinally formed into said support surface, said clamp assembly operative to hold an edge of said plate against said support surface with a clamping force generally free from additional force derived from a centrifugal effect acting upon said clamp assembly when said drum is rotated;
- and
- said clamp assembly comprising:
- a mounting portion attached to an inside surface of said groove, said mounting portion having a hinge with a pivot axis generally parallel to a spin axis of said drum;
- a clamping portion pivotally attached to said hinge, said clamping portion having a distal end and a posterior end;
- at least one spring operatively coupled to said clamping portion, said at least one spring imparting a force upon said clamping portion causing said clamping portion to rotate about said pivot axis to a first position whereas said plate is captured between said support surface and a surface of said distal end;
- wherein said clamping portion has a counterweighted portion at said distal end operative to cause a center of gravity of said clamping portion to be located at said pivot axis;
- and
- wherein said counterweighted portion is manufactured from a first material having a density greater than a second material, said second material used to manufacture a remaining portion of said clamping portion.
A clamp for holding an edge of a printing plate onto a support surface of a rotatable external drum platesetter, said drum having a groove longitudinally formed into said support surface, said clamp comprising:
- a mounting portion attached to an inside surface of said groove, said mounting portion having a hinge with a pivot axis generally parallel to a spin axis of said drum;
- a clamping portion pivotally attached to said hinge along said pivot axis, said clamping portion having a distal end and a posterior end, said pivot axis being located along a center of gravity of said clamping portion;
- at least one spring operatively coupled to said clamping portion proximate to the posterior end, and imparting a force upon said clamping portion causing said clamping portion to rotate about said pivot axis to a first position whereas said plate is captured between said support surface and a surface of said distal end;
- and
- wherein said clamping portion comprises a separate counterweight removablely attached to said distal end of said clamping portion, said counterweight operative to cause said center of gravity of said clamping portion to be located along said pivot axis.
