Abstract
Disclosed herein is a process for the production of hydrogenated nitrile rubber. The appearance of corrosion in the plant equipment in which hydrogenated nitrile rubber is produced is due to the unexpected presence of relatively large amounts of HCl, generated, surprisingly, by the hydro-dehalogenation of the monochlorobenzene solvent under the reaction conditions. The addition of a compatible weakly basic additive, such as Epoxidized Soy Bean Oil (ESBO), to the reaction mixture has alleviated this serious problem.
Claims18
A process for preparing hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber comprising the steps of:
- a) catalytically hydrogenating nitrile butadiene rubber in monochlorobenzene solvent using a Rhodium-based catalyst;
- and
- b) adding a compatible weakly basic additive to the reaction mixture after the desired degree of hydrogenation has been achieved.
A method for reducing corrosion in plant equipment in which nitrile butadiene rubber is hydrogenated by catalytic hydrogenation in monochlorobenzene using a rhodium-based catalyst which comprises adding a compatible weakly basic additive to the reaction mixture after the desired degree of hydrogenation has been achieved.
