Abstract
A woven fabric for an air bag formed of a polyamide fiber and having a single filament size of 0.5 to 4.5 dtex and a yarn size of 67 to 250 dtex for its warp and weft, the polyamide fiber containing 1 to 200 ppm of copper as a copper compound; the woven fabric having a product of yarn size of the fiber and weave density of not greater than 20,000, the woven fabric having at least 0.8 wt % of an oiling agent, the oiling agent being applied to the yarn prior to weaving, a Metsuke of 250 g/m2, a thickness of not greater than 0.30 mm, a mean bending rigidity (B) of 0.5 to 5 mN·cm2, and self-extinguishing properties; and a lightweight air bag produced by the woven fabric that can be compactly folded but hard to unfold to a loosely folded state, yet can smoothly deploy into a designed shape at the time of inflation.
Claims15
A base fabric for an air bag comprising a woven fabric having warp and weft formed of a polyamide fiber having a copper content of 1 to 200 ppm, a single filament size of 0.5 to 4.5 dtex, a yarn size of 67 to 250 dtex and tensile strength of at least 5.7 cN/dtex, and a bending rigidity per unit width of 0.5 to 5 mN·cm2/cm in terms of mean bending rigidity (B) in KES measurement, an oiling agent adhering to at least the warp yarns or weft yarns prior to weaving and at least a resulting 0.8 wt % of an oiling agent being adhered to the woven fabric after weaving, wherein a basis weight of the woven fabric per unit area is not greater than 250 g/m2 and a thickness not greater than 0.30 mm, and the base fabric exhibiting self-extinguishing property according to FMVSS302 combustion test.
A process for producing a base fabric for a light-weight air bag comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing warp and weft yarns composed of a polyamide containing 1 to 200 ppm of copper as a copper compound, and having a single filament size of 0.5 to 4.5 dtex and a yarn size of 67 to 250 dtex;
- (b) warping the w yarn with an oiling agent adhered thereto in the absence of a sizing agent;
- (c) weaving the warp and weft yarn on a loom to obtain a woven fabric provided with 0.8 wt % of an oiling agent adhering thereto, the woven fabric having a weave density of at least 80 ends (or picks)/2.54 cm, a product of yarn size of the polyamide fiber and the weave density of not greater than 20,000 dtex.end (or dtex.pick)/2.54 cm in each of the warp and the weft directions of the woven fabric.
A light weight pliable base fabric for use in an air bag comprising a woven fabric having warp and weft formed of polyamide fiber yarns, the yarn having a plurality of single filaments having a fineness in the range of 0.5 to 4.5 dtex and the yarn being of 67 to 250 dtex, wherein the improvement comprises the polyamide fiber having a copper content of 1 to 200 ppm and the warp yarns and/or the weft yarns having prior to weaving an oiling agent adhered thereto, resulting in at least a 0.8 wt. % of the oiling agent being adhered to the woven fabric, and the base fabric exhibiting self-extinguishing property according to FMVSS302 combustion test.
