Abstract
The present invention provides a biocompatible material, comprising a phospholipid or phospholipid derivative comprising various functional groups having specific chemical properties, which can function as a modular surface design unit to be incorporated or appended to a desired substrate on which it is then polymerized, thereby contributing new or specified biochemical characteristics to the polymerized and stabilized biomaterial.
Claims20
A process for improving nonthrombogenic properties of a substrate surface, said process comprising forming a bilayer by:
- attaching to said substrate surface a first layer comprising a hydrophilic polymer cushion and long-chain alkyl or acyl groups;
- forming an outer lipid monolayer attached to said first layer by means of said long-chain alkyl or acyl groups by in situ polymerization of vesicles made of a phospholipid having a phohsphorylalkylaamino substituent and a single polymerizable substituent;
- wherein said bilayer is present on said substrate in an amount and orientation effective to provide an improved nonthrombogenic surface compared to a substrate without said bilayer.
