Abstract
This invention provides a configuration of a joint that allows a satisfactory welded joint to be formed with reduced deformation of the joint region when two-face structures (panels) are friction-welded end to end. The panels 31, 32 each have two substantially parallel plates 33, 34 and a third member 35 connecting the two plates 33, 34. The end portions of the plates 33, 34 of one panel 32 are friction-welded to the end portions of the plates 33, 34 of the other panel 32. At least one of the panels has a plate 36 at its end for connecting the plates 33 and 34 and has a rigidity to support a pressing force produced during the friction welding.

- and
- friction stir welding said first member and said second member to be welded from said raised portion side of said first member, said friction stir welding being performed by moving a rotary tool along said abutting portion of said first member and said second member, said rotary tool extending from said raised portion side of said first member, said rotary tool having a first portion of a first diameter and a second portion of a second diameter smaller than said first diameter, wherein during said friction stir welding said second portion of said rotary tool extends into said raised portion and said first part of said first member, and wherein during said friction stir welding material of said raised portion fills any gaps, between said first member and said second member, which exist when said first member abuts said second member.
A friction stir welding method, performed:
- by abutting a first member and a second member, to provide an abutted portion of said first and second members, and wherein, at said abutted portion, an end portion of said first member has a raised portion which protrudes in a thickness direction of said first member, said first member having a first part and said raised portion which extends beyond said first part, and wherein, when said first and second members are abutted, said first part of said first member and said second member have surfaces that are substantially coplanar;
- and
- by inserting a rotary tool into said abutted portion from a side of said raised portion of said first member and carrying out a friction stir welding of said abutted portion, said rotary tool having a first portion of a first diameter and a second portion of a second diameter smaller than said first diameter, wherein during said friction stir welding said second portion of said rotary tool extends into said raised portion and said first part of said first member, and wherein during said friction stir welding material of said raised portion of said first member fills any gaps, between said first member and said second member, which exist when said first member abuts said second member.
A method of friction stir welding, for welding an abutted portion of a first member and a second member, wherein at said abutted portion, an end portion of said first member has a raised portion which protrudes in a thickness direction of said first member, said first member including a first part and said raised portion extending beyond said first part, wherein, when said first and second members are abutted, said first part and said second member have surfaces that are substantially coplanar, wherein said friction stir welding includes moving a rotary tool inserted into said abutted portion from a side of said raised portion of said first member, said rotary tool having a first portion of a first diameter and a second portion of a second diameter smaller than said first diameter, wherein during the friction stir welding said second portion of said rotary tool extends into said raised portion and said first part of said first member, and wherein during said friction stir welding material of said raised portion of said first member fills any gaps, between said first member and said second member, which exist when said first member abuts the second member.
A friction stir welding method, performed:
- by abutting a first member and a second member, to provide an abutted portion of said first and second members, wherein at said abutted portion, each of an end portion of said first member and an end portion of said second member has a raised portion which protrudes in a thickness direction of said respective member, said first and second members each having a first part and said raised portion which extends beyond said first part of said respective member, and wherein, when said first and second members are abutted, surfaces of said first parts of said first and second members are substantially coplanar;
- and
- by inserting a rotary tool into said abutted portion from sides of the raised portions and carrying out friction stir welding of said abutted portion, said rotary tool having a first portion of a first diameter and a second portion of a second diameter smaller than said first diameter, wherein during said friction stir welding said second portion of said rotary tool extends into said raised portions and said first parts of said first and second members.
A friction stir welding method, comprising the steps of:
- providing a first member having a first part with a first surface, a second member having a first part with a first surface, and a protruding portion;
- abutting said first member against said second member, to provide an abutting portion, and providing said protruding portion at said abutting portion, said surfaces of said first parts of said first and second members being substantially coplanar;
- and
- friction stir welding said first member and said second member to be welded from a protruding portion side, said friction stir welding being performed by moving a rotary tool along said abutting portion, said rotary tool extending from said protruding portion side, said rotary tool having a first portion of a first diameter and a second portion of a second diameter smaller than said first diameter, wherein during said friction stir welding said second portion of said rotary tool extends into said protruding portion and said first part of said first member, and wherein during said friction stir welding material of said protruding portion fills any gaps, between said first member and said second member, which exist when said first member abuts said second member.
A friction stir welding method, performed:
- by abutting a first member and a second member, to provide an abutted portion of said first and second members, and wherein at said abutted portion, each of an end portion of said first member and an end portion of said second member has a raised portion which protrudes in a thickness direction of said respective member, said first and second members each having a first part and said raised portion which extends beyond said first part, wherein said raised portions of said abutted portion protrude at both sides, in said thickness direction, of said respective member, extending beyond said first parts of said first and second members at both sides;
