## Abstract

The present invention is directed to a novel plant phenotype, designated CURLY (CUR), a nucleic acid sequence expressed in plants demonstrating the CUR phenotype and the corresponding amino acid sequence. Also provided are plant cells and plants that exhibit modified CUR expression.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An isolated polynucleotide comprising a nucleic acid sequence that encodes or is complementary to a sequence that encodes a CURLY polypeptide that has the amino acid sequence presented as SEQ ID NO:2.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The polynucleotide of claim 1 comprising the nucleic acid sequence presented as SEQ ID NO:1, or the complement thereof.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A plant transformation vector comprising an isolated polynucleotide of claim 1.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

A transgenic plant cell comprising the vector of claim 3.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

A method of producing a curled leaf phenotype in a plant, said method comprising introducing into progenitor cells of the plant a plant transformation vector according to claim 3 and growing the transformed progenitor cells to produce a transgenic plant, wherein said polynucleotide sequence is expressed and said transgenic plant exhibits a curled leaf phenotype.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

A plant obtained by a method of claim 5.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

A plant part obtained from a plant according to claim 6.
