Abstract
A system for performing through port off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery includes a port insertable between ribs into a chest wall of a patient, a heart stabilizer extendable through and stably couplable to the port, and an instrument stabilizer adapted to dampen extraneous movement to which a surgical instrument extending through the stabilizer is subject.
Claims15
A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient and for use with an endoscopic instrument, said system comprising:
- a) a heart stabilizer adapted to apply pressure against a wall of the heart to effectively eliminate motion of the heart wall at or adjacent a location at which said pressure is applied;
- b) an instrument stabilizer adapted to receive an endoscopic instrument and adapted to minimize unwanted motion at a distal end of the endoscopic instrument by applying a biasing force to the distal end of the endoscopic instrument;
- and
- c) at least one port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, at least one of said heart stabilizer and said instrument stabilizer being extendable through said at least one port device.
A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient, said system comprising:
- a) a heart stabilizer adapted to apply pressure against a wall of the heart to effectively eliminate motion of the heart wall at or adjacent a location at which said pressure is applied;
- and
- b) a port device including an elongate tubular body having a proximal end and a distal end and insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, a pair of swivels rotatable relative to the body about a common axis, and means for clamping the chest wall against said pair of swivels,
- said heart stabilizer being extendable through and coupled to said port device.
A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient and for use with an endoscopic instrument, said system comprising:
- a) an instrument stabilizer adapted to-receive an endoscopic instrument and adapted to minimize unwanted motion at a distal end of instrument by applying a biasing force to the distal end of the instrument;
- and
- b) a port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, said instrument stabilizer being extendable through and coupled to said at least one port.
A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient and for use with an endoscopic instrument, said system comprising:
- a) a heart stabilizer adapted to apply pressure against a wall of the heart to effectively eliminate motion of the heart wall at or adjacent a location at which said pressure is applied;
- b) an instrument stabilizer including a tubular member and a damping means for applying a stabilization force to said tubular member,
- wherein when the endoscopic instrument is extended through said tubular member and said instrument is moved non-axially relative to said tubular member, movement of said tubular member and consequently said instrument is damped by said damping means;
- and
- c) at least one port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, at least one of said heart stabilizer and said instrument stabilizer being extendable through said at least one port device.
A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient and for use with an endoscopic instrument, said system comprising:
- a) a heart stabilizer adapted to apply pressure against a wall of the heart to effectively eliminate motion of the heart wall at or adjacent a location at which said pressure is applied;
- b) an instrument stabilizer including a tubular member and an instrument stabilization means coupled to said tubular member for engaging a distal portion of the endoscopic instrument and applying a biasing force thereto;
- and
- c) a port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, at least one of said heart stabilizer and said instrument stabilizer being extendable through said at least one port device.
