Abstract

A single-chip central processing unit (CPU) includes a processing core and a complete cache-coherent I/O system that operates asynchronously with the processing core. An internal communications protocol uses synchronizers and data buffers to transfer information between a clock domain of the processing core and a clock domain of the I/O system. The synchronizers transfer control and handshake signal between clock domains, but the data buffer transfers data without input or output synchronization circuitry for data bits. Throughput for the system is high because the processing unit has direct access to I/O system so that no delays are incurred for complex mechanisms which are commonly employed between a CPU and an external I/O chip-set. Throughput is further increased by holding data from one DMA transfer in the data buffer for use in a subsequent DMA transfer. In one embodiment, the integrated I/O system contains a dedicated memory management unit including a translation lookaside buffer which converts I/O addresses to physical addresses for the processing core.

Dependent claims

A method of providing memory access, the method comprising:

operating a processing core in response to a first clock signal, wherein the processing core is operable to implement primary processing functions of a processor;
operating an input/output interface in response to a second clock signal which is asynchronous with the first clock signal, the input/output interface being operable to provide an interface between the processor and a device;
in response to a request for a first DMA transfer:
writing data to a data buffer accessible to both the processing core and the input/output interface;
and
providing the data from the data buffer to a destination;
synchronizing transfer of control signals between the processing core and the input/output interface, and
in response to a read request for a second DMA transfer, transferring the data from the data buffer to a second destination, wherein the data transferred in response to a request for the second DMA transfer was written to the data buffer for the first DMA transfer.

In an integrated central processing unit that comprises a processing core that operates in response to a first clock signal and an input/output I/O interface that operates in response to a second clock signal, where the first and second clock signals are respectively asynchronous, a method of transferring data between the processing core and the I/O interface, the method comprising:

operating a data buffer connected between the I/O interface and the processing core to transfer data between the processing core and the I/O interface, the processing core being operable to implement primary processing functions of a processor;
determining whether data transfer through the data buffer is in a first direction from the I/O interface to the processing core or in a second direction from the processing core to the I/O interface;
providing a direction control signal that is representative of a direction of data transfer;
connecting the I/O interface to a write port of a dual-port memory when the direction control signal is representative of the first direction of data transfer and connecting the processing core to the write port of the dual-port memory when the direction control signal is representative of the second direction of data transfer;
and
synchronizing the transfer of control signals between the processing core and the I/O interface, wherein the synchronizing further comprises:
converting an input I/O interface control signal that is generated in response to the second clock signal to an output I/O interface control signal that is synchronized to the first clock;
and
converting an input processing core control signal that is generated in response to the first clock signal to an output processing core control signal that is synchronized to the second clock signal.
