A method for dynamically altering processing core utilization in a data processing system having at least one central processing unit (CPU) residing in an integrated circuit, said CPU including at least first and second processing cores, wherein said first and second processing cores are logically connected to a shared memory, said method comprising:
- receiving, at said integrated circuit, control input that specifies which of said at least first and second processing cores is to be enabled;
- utilizing configuration logic that is hardwired into said integrated circuit to decode said control input, and to selectively control reception of input signals and transmission of output signals of one or more of said at least first and second processing cores in accordance with said control input, in response to said decoding of said control input.
