Abstract
This invention relates to processes for making phosphorus compounds R2P—X—PR2, R2P—M, R2P—L and R3P, and the novel cation R2P+(L)—X—P+(L)R2, where R represents an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, X represents a bridging group, L represents a leaving group and M represents an alkali metal atom. The invention relates further to a process for making a compound R2P—L from a compound R—H via a new process for making the compound R—Li followed by its reaction with a compound Hal2P—L. The compound R2P—X—PR2 is a ligand suitable for making catalysts for copolymerizing carbon monoxide and a olefinically unsaturated compound.

A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I)
- R2P—X—PR2 (I)
- wherein R is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, and X is a bivalent organic bridging group containing at least one and up to four bridging atoms, said process comprising:
- (a) reacting a compound of formula (IV)
- R2P—L, (IV)
- wherein L is an amine, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, or phosphine leaving group, with lithium, to produce an intermediate compound of formula (IX)
- R2P—Li;
- and (IX)
- (b) reacting said intermediate compound with a compound of formula Hal-X-Hal wherein Hal is a halogen atom.
A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I)
- R2P—X—PR2 (I)
- wherein R is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, and X is a bivalent organic bridging group containing at least one and up to four bridging atoms and substituted with a C1-C4 alkyl group, said process comprising treating a salt of formula (XII)
- R2P30(L)—X—P30(L)R2.2Hal−, (XII)
- wherein L is an amine, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, or phosphine leaving group and Hal is halogen, with a reducing agent.
A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I)
- R2P—X—PR2, (I)
- wherein R is hydrocarbyl substituted with a polar moiety, and X is a bivalent organic bridging group containing at least one and up to four bridging atoms and substituted with a C1-C4 alkyl group, said process comprising:
- (a) reacting a compound of general formula (IV)
- R2P—L, (IV)
- wherein L is an amine, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, or phosphine leaving group, with a compound of the formula Hal-X-Hal where Hal is halogen, to provide an intermediate of the formula R2P+(L)—X—P+(L)R2.2Hal−;
- and (b) treating the intermediate with a reducing agent.
