## Abstract

An isolated and purified nucleic acid molecule encoding an inclusion membrane protein C of a strain of Chlamydia, is useful for nucleic acid immunization of a host, including a human host, against disease caused by infection by a strain of Chlamydia, particularly C. pneumoniae.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An isolated and purified nucleic acid molecule encoding an inclusion membrane protein C of a strain of Chlamydia having a polynucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a polynucleotide sequence having SEQ ID Nos: 1 or 2 or the complementary polynucleotide sequence thereto, and
(b) a polynucleotide sequence encoding an amino acid sequence having SEQ ID No: 3.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 which is retrieved from the strain of Chlamydia by PCR amplification of genomic bacterial DNA using synthetic oligonucleotide primers having a nucleotide sequence complementary to 5′ and 3′ ends of the encoding domain.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The nucleic acid molecule of claim 2 wherein each said primers consist of about 10 to 40 nucleotides.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The nucleic acid molecule of claim 2 wherein each said primers consist of about 15 to 25 nucleotides.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The nucleic acid molecule of claim 3 wherein each said primers contains at least about 40% of the nucleotides which are C and G nucleotides to ensure efficient hybridization.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The nucleic acid molecule of claim 4 wherein each said primers contains at least about 50% of the nucleotides which are C and G nucleotides to ensure efficient hybridization.
