Abstract
A novel relationship between pancreatico-biliary secretion and autistic syndrome is disclosed. This relationship enables a novel therapy for the treatment of the symptoms of autistic syndromes, comprising the administration of a therapeutically effective, preferably intravenous, dose of secretin to an individual with autistic syndrome. The relationship further enables a differential diagnosis for autistic syndrome, comprising an analysis of an individual's blood and/or intestinal tissue for the presence of secretin and comparison of the level of secretin to known norms.
Claims41
A method for treating a gastrointestinal dysfunction in an individual exhibiting one or more symptoms of an autistic disorder, the method comprising administering to the individual an effective amount of secretin, wherein the gastrointestinal dysfunction is improved.
A method for treating an individual exhibiting one or more symptoms of an-autistic disorder, the method comprising administering to the individual an amount of secretin sufficient to stimulate the endogenous release of serotonin in the individual, wherein one or more symptoms of autistic disorder are improved.
A method for diagnosing an autistic disorder in an individual, the method comprising
- obtaining a sample of blood from the individual;
- and
- analyzing the blood level of secretin in the blood;
- wherein a decreased blood level of secretin compared to a normal secretin blood level indicates the possibility of autistic disorder in the individual.
