Compounds of formula (I): wherein Rx is cyano or bromo; R1 is halo; R2 is C1-C3 alkyl, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts and prodrugs thereof have activity as antiretrovirals.

A method for the preparation of a compound of the Formula I comprising the Curtius rearrangement of the azide of a compound of the formula:
- followed by coupling with a compound of the formula
- and deprotection, wherein R1, R2 and RX are as defined above and PG is an hydroxy-protecting group.
