Electromagnetic actuator with an oscillating spring-mass system

An actuator comprising:

• a jacket;
• at least one magnet attached to the jacket and comprising a length, a first end, and a second end;
• each of the first and second ends of the at least one magnet comprising a surface which is at least partially covered by the jacket;
• a core comprising a length and projecting portions;
• an electrically conductive coil through which an electrical current may flow mounted to the core;
• the coil comprising a length and ends which are at least partially covered by the projecting portions of the core, wherein the coil surrounds the core;
• the coil being arranged adjacent the at least one magnet and separated from the at least one magnet by a gap;
• a distance between the surface of the first end of the at least one magnet and the surface of the second end of the at least one magnet being greater than the length of the coil;
• at least one of the coil and the at least one magnet being mounted to vibrate;
• at least one of the coil and the at least one magnet being statically mounted;
• wherein one of the coil and the at least one magnet are capable of vibrating while the other of the coil and the magnet remain static.
